We paid a visit to see our good friends Rob and Helen at their new home in the New Zealand North Island. Tauranga is a 25 minute domestic flight from Auckland or a 3 hour drive depending on your preference. On reflection, driving it or getting one of the shuttle bus / taxis is probably the better option.
A fun packed agenda was planned to sample some of Tauranga's highlights including waterfall walks, beaches, restaurants and a climb up the prominent Mount Maunganui. Weather in February was pleasant, nice sunny days and sea temperature on the cool side.
The beaches were very chilled out and offered some good boogie boarding action. The rips were so strong on certain days that you needed a set of stubby fins just to get out to the breaking waves. You also needed to be careful on the way in as some of the waves would slam you to the floor and leave a nasty sand/shell graze. No pain, no gain.
A good week was had by all with VIP hospitality from the McKenzies. Enjoyed it muchly!
