We escaped for a romantic anniversary weekend to the Blue Mountains, which is about a two hour drive west of Sydney. Being a special occasion, we splashed out a little on the accommodation and checked in to the elegant apartments at The Falls. Splendid!
The Blue Mountains are hailed as New South Wales' premier natural wonder. It brought back memories of the Grand Canyon and Zion in the USA, albeit on a smaller scale.
We spent most of our time in the town of Wentworth Falls which is peaceful, not too busy with tourists and offered some great trekking routes on its back doorstep. Donning our trusty walking boots, we headed out on a five hour trail taking in Wentworth Falls, down into Jameson Valley, navigating the jungle-like floor of Wentworth Pass, and then back up the waterfalls that flow through the Valley of the Waters. Simply stunning and many great picture taking opportunities.
On the Sunday, we drove to Katoomba to see the famous Three Sisters rocks, however it was swarming with tourists and we couldn't face getting out of the car after our idyllic experience the day before. Spoilt!
All in all, a fantastic trip and a must see if you visit Sydney. Also consider accommodation at Silvermere Guesthouse which we stayed at on further trips and was excellent. One of the best fired breakfasts I've ever had actually.
